In October 2022, the FDA announced a recall of several brand-name products that have elevated levels of benzene [1]. The recall was issued after an internal investigation identified the propellent in the aerosol cans as the source of contamination. An independent laboratory verified that benzene was found in 70% of aerosol dry shampoos they tested [2].

The recall includes dry shampoos from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, Tresemme, and Bed Head brands--all manufactured by Unilever. 

Benzene is a cancer-causing chemical that’s damaging through long term exposure, whether that be through skin contact, orally, or through inhalation. Benzene causes cells not to work correctly. For example, it can cause bone marrow not to produce enough red blood cells, which can lead to anemia [3]. Also, it can damage the immune system by changing blood levels of antibodies and causing the loss of white blood cells.

This chemical is commonly found in household products and often found in other recalled items like aerosol sunscreen and deodorant. Despite the danger of this chemical, benzene is among the top 20 chemicals used in production according to the CDC.

Since benzene is found in aerosol products that are generally used indoors, the cause for concern heightens. Spraying this chemical indoors will cause it to linger longer and be inhaled for prolonged periods of time.
